Congress releases report highlighting gap between Modi’s promises and reality
New Delhi: The Congress party has said that the Modi government has failed to deliver on its promises, adding that despite years of grand announcements and lofty claims, there has been little improvement in the lives of ordinary Indians.
According to Kashmir Media Service, marking the completion of two years of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) third term in office, Congress released a 75-page document titled “Promise vs Reality”, highlighting the widening gap between the Modi government’s promises and its actual performance.
The document was unveiled by Congress leaders Rajeev Gowda and Amitabh Dubey at a press conference. They said that while the government had repeatedly made ambitious promises over the past twelve years, the ground realities painted a very different picture.
The leaders pointed out that the government had recently reduced the number of subsidized LPG cylinders under the Ujjwala Yojana from nine to four annually. They recalled that the scheme was launched with the promise of providing cleaner and safer cooking fuel to women and originally envisaged the supply of 12 subsidized cylinders a year, which was later reduced to nine and has now been cut further.
Criticizing the government’s economic record, they said the Modi administration had pledged to make India a global hub for employment generation, yet unemployment remained a serious concern, with four out of every ten graduates reportedly without jobs.
The Congress leaders also said that the adverse effects of demonetization continue to impact the economy and criticized the government for failing to strengthen democratic institutions. They said that the names of 65 million voters had been removed from electoral rolls across the country.
Expressing concern over rising prices, they said the government had promised relief from inflation but failed to deliver, noting that LPG cylinder prices had increased by 123 percent since 2014.
