Russian expert warns India against Weaponising water, stresses continuity of IWT

Islamabad : A prominent Russian expert has strongly criticised India for attempting to weaponise water against Pakistan, describing it as a serious violation of international law and a threat to regional peace.

According to Kashmir Media Service, speaking at a seminar on Indus Water Treaty in Islamabad, Russian expert Dr. Roxolana Zigón emphasised that the continuity of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) is essential for peace and stability in South Asia.

She said, “The continuity of the Indus Waters Treaty is essential for peace and stability in South Asia. India is clearly trying to weaponise water. India’s announcement to deprive Pakistan of its waters is a blatant violation of international law.”

Dr. Roxolana Zigón warned that by undermining the treaty, India is attempting to change the geopolitical landscape in its favour. “Such unilateral actions set a dangerous precedent and can lead to serious environmental, humanitarian, and political crises in South Asia,” she added.

The Russian expert stressed that water cannot and should not be used as a weapon. She called upon the international community to take serious notice of India’s moves and ensure that the Indus Waters Treaty is respected in both letter and spirit.

Her remarks come amid growing concerns over India’s aggressive posturing regarding the vital water-sharing agreement that has governed the Indus River system between the two countries for more than six decades.
