Australian Greens condemn as ‘pure madness uranium deal with India
Party cites India’s ‘nuclear wildcard’ with history of theft, smuggling

Canberra : The Australian Greens Party has condemned Australia’s uranium export deal with India, calling it “pure madness” in light of New Delhi’s ongoing nuclear security record.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Greens, Australia’s third-largest political party, said India is a “nuclear wildcard” with a documented history of theft, smuggling and military aggression that puts over 1.7 billion people in South Asia at risk.
Citing incidents from 1994 to 2026, the party highlighted multiple cases of uranium and radioactive material theft and smuggling, including seizures in Meghalaya, West Bengal, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Jharkhand and Kolkata, as well as recent cases involving californium linked to facilities like BARC.
It said hundreds of kilograms of nuclear material have been diverted over three decades. The Greens also referenced India’s “accidental” firing of a nuclear-capable BrahMos missile into Pakistan in March 2022, calling it reckless behavior by an unsupervised nuclear arsenal.
“Feeding India’s program with Australian uranium doesn’t promote peace. It arms a dangerous bully,” the party said, urging Australia to scrap the deal immediately.

The Greens said the criticism is urgent given India’s refusal to accept full NPT safeguards and its continued expansion of military nuclear capabilities.
