Pakistan, China stress implementation of UNSC resolutions on Kashmir at Security Council meeting

United Nations : Pakistan and China have underlined that non-implementation of Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir undermines the UN Security Council’s authority and prolongs human suffering.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the two countries co-organised an Arria-Formula meeting of the UN Security Council on “Bridging the Implementation Gap: Security Council Resolutions and the Maintenance of International Peace and Security”. The meeting provided a platform for Member States to discuss how the Council can ensure the full, effective and non-selective implementation of its resolutions.
Briefers including UN Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Khiari stressed that implementation lies at the heart of the Council’s credibility and effectiveness, and that resolutions must have clear implementation pathways, sustained reporting and follow-up mechanisms.
In his remarks, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, said Security Council resolutions are “not mere expressions of intent but legal obligations under the UN Charter”. He underscored that selective or prolonged non-implementation weakens the Council’s authority, prolongs unresolved disputes and deepens human suffering, including in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and Palestine.
Ambassador Ahmad emphasised that the non-implementation of Security Council resolutions on the Jammu and Kashmir dispute meant that a major international dispute remained unresolved, with grave consequences for international peace and security and prolonged suffering for the Kashmiri people.
Pakistan proposed practical measures including an annual review of unimplemented and partially implemented resolutions, clearer implementation pathways, stronger follow-up, and better alignment of the Secretary-General’s good offices and peace operations with Council decisions.
Council members and other UN Member States welcomed the China-Pakistan initiative and stressed that Council decisions must be realistic, actionable and supported by sustained diplomacy and regular review.
