CJP expresses concern over detention of student protesters across India
Warns Modi govt of further steps if detainees not released immediately
New Delhi: The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Monday expressed concern over reports that student protesters and other demonstrators are being detained and targeted by authorities in Assam, West Bengal, Bihar and other states of India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, CJP said in a statement that it had called off the agitation after receiving assurances from the Government of India that no punitive action would be taken against protesters in BJP- and NDA-ruled states. The party alleged that fresh arrests and detentions raise serious questions over implementation of those assurances.
The party said its legal team has been coordinating with lawyers in the affected states to secure the release of detainees and provide legal assistance. It urged the Modi government to ensure immediate release of all detained protesters and withdrawal of FIRs registered against them.
CJP stated that Delhi had committed to providing a written guarantee by Tuesday, July 28, and warned that failure to honour the assurances would amount to a breach of trust with the party and with young people who chose dialogue over continued protests. The party said it would closely monitor the situation and take further steps if detainees are not released and FIRs are not withdrawn within the stipulated timeline.
