India’s hypocrisy exposed at UNHRC 62nd session
Geneva: India’s double standards on human rights were laid bare during an informal discussion marking the 20th Anniversary of the UN Human Rights Council, where New Delhi praised UNHRC mechanisms while demanding curbs on their scrutiny.
According to Kashmir Media Service, India’s Permanent Representative lauded the UPR, Special Procedures and Treaty Bodies but simultaneously complained of their alleged “lack of objectivity and selectivity.” Delhi instead pushed for “measurable impact” and “capacity building” rather than robust accountability.
The defensive posture comes amid mounting international criticism of India’s record. In 2025 alone, authorities carried out arbitrary demolitions of over 10,000 Muslim homes, businesses and mosques in Gujarat. Thousands of custodial deaths and extrajudicial “encounter” killings have disproportionately targeted Muslims in Uttar Pradesh and Assam.
The Modi government also faced condemnation over the deletion of nearly 52 million voter names nationwide through controversial processes, with Muslims hit hardest — including 95% of deletions in one West Bengal constituency.
Independent panels have warned of systematic persecution that may amount to crimes against humanity. Analysts said India’s attempt to weaken UNHRC mechanisms while praising them reveals a regime “terrified of genuine accountability” and seeking a toothless, state-centric Council that never challenges its repression.
