Goons were sent to students’ homes to force apologies: Rahul Gandhi
Says peaceful protesters faced violence and harassment
New Delhi: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has said that students who staged peaceful protests were subjected to violence, intimidation and harassment, while women protesters were forced to apologize after goons were sent to their homes.
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing a press conference with students from different Indian states at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Rahul Gandhi said the students had raised their voices to defend the Constitution, the education system and the country’s future. He said the protesters remained peaceful, yet they were baton-charged, assaulted and continue to face harassment.
Addressing the students, Rahul Gandhi said they had done nothing wrong and therefore had no reason to apologize to anyone.
Holding Indian Home Minister Amit Shah accountable for the police crackdown, Rahul Gandhi said that if the action was taken without Shah’s knowledge, he had failed in his responsibilities. “If it was carried out on his orders, then he is directly responsible. In either case, the responsibility lies with Amit Shah,” he said.
Rahul Gandhi further said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Amit Shah lacked the courage to face the media and answer questions over the incident.
