Lucknow: A 16-year-old missing Muslim girl was found hanging from a tree in BJP-ruled Uttar Pradesh.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the 16-year-old Muslim girl, who went missing from her home in Sitapur on August 11, was found hanging from a tree near a cemetery three days later. The incident took place in Shankarpur Sarohi village under the Kotwali Dehat police station area of Sitapur district. According to the family, the girl left home at around 4 pm on August 11 and did not return. They said they informed police about her disappearance the same day and also approached the police station on August 12, but a missing-person case was not registered.

The victim’s family said that police delayed registering a missing-person complaint. The matter was later raised by Bhim Army chief and Lok Sabha MP Chandrashekhar Azad. He said that members of his organisation contacted the girl’s family and put pressure on police to register a case.

An FIR was subsequently registered on August 14. A short time after the FIR was registered, the girl’s body was found hanging from a tree near a cemetery close to Shankarpur Sarohi village. Police reached the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination.

The family named three people as accused in the FIR. Police have taken all three into custody and begun questioning them. However, the office declined to publicly disclose the identities of the three people named in the FIR.
