Ladakh bodies warn of mass agitation over New Delhi’s delaying tactics

Leh : In the Ladakh region of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) have warned of mass agitation if New Delhi continues to adopt delaying tactics on their demands.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the warning came after a crucial meeting between Ladakh representatives and a team from the Indian Ministry of Home Affairs in Leh failed to make any significant headway. The meeting among others was attended by LAB leaders Chering Dorjay Lakruk, Sonam Wangchuk and Dorjay Stanzin; KDA representatives Asgar Ali Karbalai, Sajjad Kargili and Ghulam Rasool; Ladakh MP Mohammad Hanifa Jan and other representatives from the region.

Reportedly, during the two-hour meeting, no progress was reported on implementing the in-principle agreement reached on May 22 regarding the creation of a UT-level elected body for Ladakh with legislative, executive and financial powers. Though no official statement was issued after the meeting, the LAB and KDA submitted list of non-negotiable points to the Indian Home Ministry team.

Following the lack of progress, LAB and KDA leaders warned that any further delay would compel them to revert to the demands of Statehood and Sixth schedule status and launch level agitation on the ground. They said any deviation from minutes of the May 22 meeting would leave them with no option but to intensify their struggle.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, LAB chairman Chering Dorjay and KDA leader Asgar Ali Karbalai said the Indian Home Ministry team tried to divert attention towards developmental issues but the Ladakh representatives insisted that the talks remain focused on the commitments outlined in the May 22 minutes.

They said these included an elected UT-level body with legislative, executive and financial powers, along with constitutional safeguards under Articles 371A, 371G and 371F.

The LAB and KDA leaders also submitted a memorandum to Ladakh Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra outlining their “non-negotiable” demands, including the proposed legislative and executive framework at the UT level, financial powers and safeguards for the people of Ladakh.

They further demanded the withdrawal of cases registered in connection with the September 24, 2025 agitation in Leh and compensation for those killed and injured in firing by Indian forces.
