Protests held in Jammu against massive power tariff hike

Jammu : The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) staged a protest in Jammu against the Modi regime’s decision to hike power tariff in the territory from September 1, 2026.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protesters raised slogans including “Bijli Mehangi, Awaam Pareshaan” and “200 unit Bijli Do Warna Kursi Chhod Do”, stating that the present dispensation had betrayed its poll promise of providing 200 units of free electricity.
PDP spokesperson Varinder Sonu said the government had instead imposed over a 6% tariff increase. “You promised 200 units of free power to come to power. Now you call the hike a compulsion. This is betrayal,” he said.
“NC was given votes to heal the wounds of poor people. But they have taken a U-turn and are burdening them with irrational hikes,” Sonu said, adding that if the government cannot deliver on its promise, it should resign.
