Dope test failure strips Indian kabaddi player of Asian Beach Games silver medal

New Delhi: Indian kabaddi player Brijendra Singh Choudhary has been stripped of his silver medal from the Asian Beach Games after testing positive for a banned substance, in another case reflecting the moral bankruptcy on the rise in Indian sports.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the International Testing Agency (ITA) revealed that Choudhary tested positive for brinzolamide, a prohibited diuretic and masking agent, during an in-competition test on April 27 in Sanya, China.

The Games were held from April 22 to 30. The ITA, on behalf of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), said the athlete accepted the sanction, which includes disqualification of his individual result in the men’s beach kabaddi event where India won silver. The women’s team had won gold.

Brinzolamide is listed as a specified substance prohibited at all times under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) rules. The ITA said the matter has been referred to the International Kabaddi Federation for further action. Choudhary, an all-rounder who has also played for Dabang Delhi in the Pro-Kabaddi League, did not challenge the violation.
