Modi’s censorship regime: Twitter takes down journalists’ accounts reporting on farmers’ protest in India

New Delhi: Modi government’s expanding censorship regime again came into play when Twitter handles of at least two journalists reporting independently from the ongoing protest by Indian farmers were taken town, today.

The Twitter (now X), handles of Punjab-based journalists Sandeep Singh and Mandeep Punia were blocked in India on Wednesday afternoon.

Additionally, the handle of Gaon Savera, the organization Mandeep Punia runs, has also been taken down in India.

Reportedly, these Twitter handles covering the farmers’ movement have been blocked in response to a legal demand by the government of India.

Earlier, Haryana government has declared the suspension of mobile internet services, bulk SMS, and all dongle services offered on mobile networks in the districts of Ambala, Kurukshetra, Kaithal, Jind, Hisar, Fatehabad, and Sirsa in the state.

Thousands of farmers are marching towards New Delhi to press for their demand for a law governing the Minimum Support Price, amidst the rising losses to the farmers.

The farmers are being met with brute force at the border between Punjab and Haryana. Dozens of farmers have been injured in police action so far.
