India labeled ‘poor and very unequal’ in World Inequality Report
New Delhi: The latest World Inequality Report has cast a revealing spotlight on India, portraying it as not only one of the world’s most unequal nations but also labeling it as a “Poor and ‘Very’ Unequal Country.”
According to Kashmir Media Service, this dual classification underscores the deep-rooted economic disparities that pervade the country’s social fabric, signaling an urgent call for action to rectify these alarming trends.
The report delves deep into India’s economic landscape, revealing a stark dichotomy between the affluence of the privileged few and the enduring poverty gripping a significant portion of the population. Despite notable economic growth, a large segment continues to grapple with poverty, hindering the nation’s overall progress.
While India has made strides in economic development, the benefits have disproportionately favored the affluent, widening the gulf of wealth inequality. Persistent high poverty rates contribute to India’s classification as a “Poor Country,” despite governmental efforts to address the issue.
Challenges such as limited access to education, healthcare, and viable employment opportunities perpetuate the cycle of poverty, posing significant obstacles to India’s socio-economic advancement.
The report also underscores India’s status as a “Very Unequal Country,” attributing this to the concentration of wealth among the privileged class. This growing income gap not only threatens social cohesion but also undermines long-term economic sustainability.
Of particular concern is the lack of social mobility, which impedes individuals from lower-income backgrounds in accessing opportunities for education and professional growth. This systemic barrier further entrenches economic inequality, deepening societal divides.
