Sonam Wangchuk embarks on 21-day fast in Ladakh for in support of rights’ demand

Kargil: Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned engineer and innovator whose life inspired the character “Phunsukh Wangdu” portrayed by Aamir Khan in the Bollywood blockbuster “3 Idiots,” has commenced a 21-day fast in Ladakh.

According to Kashmir Media Service, this fast, which began on Tuesday, March 5, aims to draw attention to the pressing issue of climate change in the Himalayas, particularly in Ladakh.

Wangchuk’s fast is structured in phases and will persist until the Indian government acknowledges his demand for implementing the Sixth Schedule and granting Ladakh statehood. He, along with other locals, has taken shelter at Leh’s NDS Stadium, braving the harsh cold with temperatures plummeting as low as -16 degrees Celsius during the nights.

Wangchuk has emerged as a prominent advocate for environmental conservation and sustainable development in the region. His commitment to the cause reflects the deep-rooted concerns of the Ladakhi community regarding their socio-political status and environmental well-being.

The fast undertaken by Wangchuk underscores the ongoing struggle of the Ladakhi people for greater autonomy and recognition of their distinct identity. It serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by marginalized communities in remote regions, urging authorities to address their grievances and aspirations.
