Gujarat University asks Afghan, other foreign Muslim students to vacate hostel
Ahmedabad: The BJP government has ordered six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa to vacate their rooms in Gujarat University’s hostel due to overstaying in India.
According to the Kashmir Media Service, this action follows weeks after some foreign students were assaulted by Hindutva BJP/RSS militants for offering namaz on the premises of Gujarat University. Approximately two dozen Hindutva individuals forcibly entered the government-run university’s hostel on the night of March 16 and attacked students from foreign countries who were offering Namaz at one of the blocks during the ongoing month of Ramzan, as confirmed by the police. Two students from Sri Lanka and Tajikistan were hospitalized following the incident.
Following the March 16 attack, delegations from Afghanistan and Gambia visited the university and held a meeting with the vice-chancellor regarding safety measures.
Speaking to the media, the university’s vice-chancellor, Neerja Gupta, stated, “Six students from Afghanistan and one from East Africa were asked to vacate their hostel rooms after it was discovered that they were overstaying.” She further claimed that these individuals had completed their studies and were staying in the hostel as ex-students due to pending administrative work.
“We have finalized the necessary paperwork, and they can now safely return to their respective countries. We do not wish to accommodate former students in our hostel. We have notified the consulates of the respective countries, and they have also instructed these students to vacate the hostel,” added the vice-chancellor.
Gupta mentioned that more than 300 international students are currently enrolled in Gujarat University.
