NEET exam controversy: Kabil Sibal slams Modi’s silence, seeks SC probe

New Delhi: Amid the raging row over the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) exam, Kapil Sibal, an Indian lawyer and politician who is a Member of the Upper House, the Rajya Sabha, has called for an Indian Supreme Court-appointed probe into the alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a media interview, Sibal also hit out at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the issue, saying if the testing system in any examination becomes corrupt then it is “not really neat for the PM to remain silent”.

He also hit out at Indian Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan for his remarks rejecting allegations of paper leak or rigging in the prestigious exam. Sibal said there is rampant corruption in the manner in which examinations are being held not just in one state but throughout the country.

The Indian MP said a CBI inquiry will protect the administration and so an inquiry is needed through an independent agency or independent officers selected by the Supreme Court and not by the government in power.

Sibal urged all political parties to raise the matter strongly in the upcoming session of the Indian Parliament.

The move comes after allegations of question paper leaks and other irregularities surfaced in the exam held on May 5 across 4,750 centres. Around 24 lakh candidates appeared for it.

Sibal’s demand for an independent probe has gained support from other political parties, with many urging the Modi government to take swift action to address the concerns.
