Family of accused Nikhil Gupta seeks Delhi’s intervention in Pannun murder bid
New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events, the family of Nikhil Gupta, the Indian man accused of plotting to assassinate Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in the United States, is urging the Indian government to come to his aid.
Gupta, who was extradited to the US earlier this month, faces murder-for-hire conspiracy charges for his involvement in the foiled plot. The Indian government has been accused of being involved in the plot, which it vehemently denies.
The family claims they were left in the dark about Gupta’s extradition and have been unable to establish direct contact with him since his transfer to the US. They are now seeking the Indian government’s assistance in securing his release and ensuring his safety.
The development comes as Canada investigates India’s possible involvement in the murder of another Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in June 2023.
