US supports direct talks between Pakistan and India

Washington: The US State Department said that Washington supports direct talks between Pakistan and India, however, the scope of negotiations should be determined by the two neighbouring countries.

According to Kashmir Media Service, at a regular press briefing in Washington, the State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said “We appreciate our important partnerships with India and Pakistan. As previously said, we favor direct talks between India and Pakistan, but the speed, breadth, and character should be defined by those two countries, not by us”.

Miller also said the US and Pakistan have a shared interest in combating threats to regional security.

“We partner with Pakistan on security through our high-level counterterrorism dialogue, including several counterterrorism capacity building programmes, and we support a series of US-Pakistan military-to-military engagements,” he said.

The United States, he said, also maintains regular communication with Pakistani leaders as part of a bilateral partnership on counterterrorism issues.

“And we will continue to discuss regional security in detail, including through our annual counterterrorism dialogue and other bilateral consultations,” he added.
