Former IAS officer turned Congress MP calls out BJP for minority atrocities

New Delhi: Newly-elected Congress MP from Tiruvallu, Tamil Nadu, Sasikanth Senthil, sparked an uproar in the Lok Sabha today by urging the BJP government to halt atrocities against minorities, Dalits, and Adivasis after taking his oath.

“Stop the shameful atrocities against minorities, Dalits, and Adivasis…, prompting an uproar from BJP MPs.

The video of his speech quickly went viral on social media, as reported by Indian media.

Senthil, a former IAS officer, resigned from his bureaucratic post following the abrogation of Article 370 in occupied Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, citing it was “unethical to remain in the post when the fundamental building blocks of a diverse democracy are being compromised.” He joined the Congress in 2020.

In the recent Lok Sabha elections, Senthil defeated BJP strongman and Tamil Nadu state president K. Annamalai by over 200,000 votes. Notably, Annamalai is also a former IPS officer.

In an interview with India Today, Senthil described his contest against Annamalai as a clash of ideologies rather than just a battle between an IAS and an IPS officer. “One ideology represents the idea of India, embodied by the Congress, while the other represents everything that goes against the essence of India, as embodied by the BJP,” Senthil told India Today.
