Death of Dalit man in police custody sparks protests in Uttar Pradesh
Lucknow: The death of a Dalit man in police custody triggered protests in BJP-ruled state of Uttar Pradesh.
According to Kashmir Media Service, 28-year-old Dalit man Akash Singh, a father of two, was arrested by Indian police last Tuesday and subsequently died in police custody in Firozabad district. His postmortem revealed an antemortem head injury, raising questions about the circumstances leading to his death.
Family members of the victim said that police tortured him to death. Singh’s mother, Shakuntala told the media, “The police beat him brutally, leading to his death. He was arrested under false charges of motorcycle theft, despite already owning his own motorcycle.”
Following reports of Singh’s death, protests erupted in Firozabad, with enraged residents blocking the ambulance carrying his body for nearly 12 hours.
