12 Indian nationals arrested in Sri Lanka for suspected cybercrime involvement
Colombo: In a raid conducted in central Sri Lanka, authorities arrested 12 Indian nationals suspected of being involved in cybercrimes and seized their equipment.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sri Lankan police have been intensifying their efforts to crack down on foreigners arriving on tourist visas and engaging in suspected criminal activities. This organized group of 12 Indians was apprehended at a house in Halloluwa, Kandy, approximately 120 km east of Colombo.
The Kandy Crime Investigations Unit confiscated 22 desktop computers, four laptops, over 50 advanced cellular phones, eleven ATM cards, and various other pieces of equipment.
Investigations revealed that the suspects had rented the house for Rs 300,000 per month to conduct their secret activities.
“They are suspected of operating an international-level betting business through the internet and other computer-related crimes. An investigation is ongoing,” media reports quoted police as saying.
This follows an earlier incident last week where Sri Lankan police arrested at least 200 foreigners, predominantly Indians, for allegedly participating in online financial scams.
