Congress protest in IIOJK thwarted, exposing Delhi’s unchecked power

Srinagar: In a striking display of Delhi’s unchecked control over Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, police forcibly stopped peaceful marches by Congress workers to the Governor House (Raj Bhavan) in Srinagar and Jammu.

According to Kashmir Media Service, this action comes despite the Congress being part of the ruling coalition in the territory, highlighting that ultimate authority remains concentrated with the Delhi-appointed Lieutenant Governor. The protests were part of a demonstration against the BJP-led Indian regime’s policies.

In Srinagar, Congress workers assembled at their headquarters on MA Road. However, the police locked the gates of the party office, effectively confining the protesters and preventing them from marching towards the Governor House.

A Congress leader condemned the action, stating, “We were peacefully marching to highlight issues such as the BJP’s defense of Gautam Adani, the failure to maintain peace in Manipur, and the denial of statehood to [occupied] Jammu and Kashmir. Instead, the administration used force to silence us.”

In Jammu, a similar protest led IIOJK Congress chief Tariq Hameed Karra from the party’s Shaheedi Chowk office was met with police resistance. Barbed-wire barricades were erected on Residency Road, halting the march before it could reach the Governor House.

Karra criticized the administration for “police high-handedness,” emphasizing that the suppression of peaceful protests reflects the regimet’s unwillingness to address legitimate concerns.

“We will continue our fight for the restoration of statehood to [occupied] Jammu and Kashmir, which is our constitutional right,” Karra asserted, reiterating the Congress Party’s commitment to advocating for the rights of the territory’s people.
