ICJ’s Palestine ruling sets precedent for Kashmir, says Pakistan’s UN Ambassador
New York: At a Kashmir solidarity meeting held in New York, Pakistan’s UN Ambassador Munir Akram drew parallels between the situations in occupied Palestine and Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, emphasizing that both violate two basic international law principles.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Munir Akram asserted that the recent International Court of Justice (ICJ) conclusions regarding Palestine also apply to the situation in Jammu and Kashmir, highlighting the shared principles of the right to self-determination and the prohibition of acquiring territory by force.
Speaking at the event, which marked the fifth anniversary of India’s illegal abrogation of IIOJK’s special status, Ambassador Akram stated that the ICJ’s findings on Palestine have become integral to international law and should be applied to Kashmir as well. He underscored the UN’s obligation to not recognize the illegal occupation and to consider further actions to end it.
“Pakistan will advocate for the application of the ICJ’s conclusions not only in the case of Palestine but also in the context of occupied Jammu and Kashmir,” Akram affirmed.
The meeting was organized by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN and the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York. It was attended by a diverse audience including Permanent Representative of Turkiye Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, diplomats from the OIC Contact Group on Kashmir, members of the Kashmiri diaspora, and various youth and students.
In addition to Ambassador Akram, speakers included Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Secretary General of the World Kashmir Awareness Forum; Abdelhamid Siyam, a senior Palestinian journalist and professor; Ambassador Hameed Ajibaiye Opeloyeru, Permanent Observer of the OIC Mission to the UN; and Senator Lt. General (rtd) Abdul Qayyum, former chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Defence Production.
