Curfew, internet suspension in Rajasthan’s Udaipur after communal violence erupts over school stabbing
Jaipur: Authorities in India’s Rajasthan state have imposed a curfew and suspended internet services for 24 hours following a flare-up of communal violence triggered by a stabbing incident at a government-run school in Udaipur district.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the violence and protests erupted in the Madhuban area after a Class 10 student was attacked by a fellow student. Soon after the stabbing incident, members of various Hindutva groups gathered and set fire to several vehicles in a garage. The protesters also engaged in stone-pelting against people and police.
In response to the escalating situation, the district administration decided to shut down internet services. The decision to shut down the internet was taken in light of the law and order situation, according to the official notification issued by the administration. Udaipur District Collector Arvind Poswal announced that all schools and colleges in the city would remain closed on Saturday until further notice. He also announced that prohibitory orders have been imposed in the district
An FIR has been registered against unknown persons involved in the violence.
In a controversial statement, BJP MLA Phool Singh Meena suggested demolishing the accused student’s house with a bulldozer, further inflaming tensions.
The situation remains tense as authorities work to restore calm and address the communal unrest in the region.
