Madhya Pradesh to provide 700 US-made guns to BSF deployed along B’desh border
Bhopal: The Madhya Pradesh government has announced that it will supply 700 US-made pump action guns to the Border Security Force for deployment along the International Border with Bangladesh.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department will transfer these firearms from its arsenal to the BSF. The guns, which fire rubber bullets, are currently used within the state to deter armed poachers and illegal tree-felling operations, said PK Singh, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Protection) for Madhya Pradesh.
“We will give 700 pump action guns from our armoury to the BSF,” Singh said. He confirmed that the MP government had asked the Forest Department for these guns after getting a letter from the Indian Home Ministry in connection with ramping up security along the border with Bangladesh.
The guns, which were imported from US-based Maverick Arms Inc in 2008, feature a single barrel and are of 12-gauge calibre.
India shares a 4,096-km border with Bangladesh, with significant stretches in West Bengal (2,217 km), as well as in Assam, Tripura, Mizoram, and Meghalaya.
