BJP-controlled authority places Mirwaiz under house arrest in Srinagar
Srinagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-installed LG authority has one again placed All Parties Hurriyat Conference senior leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest in Srinagar, Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, today.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the authority put him under house detention to prevent him from offering the obligatory Juma prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid and other religious and social activities.
“Again disallowed from going to Jamia Masjid on Friday for the second consecutive week. As I raise people’s issues and concerns from the pulpit, as is my duty, the authorities put me under house detention,” the senior APHC leader said in a post on X. “But an authoritarian mindset can’t think beyond… strongly condemn my house arrest and the imprisonment of thousands of Kashmiri prisoners who are victims of this mindset,” Mirwaiz Umar Farooq added.
Meanwhile, the Anjuman Auqaf of the Jamia Masjid in a statement issued in Srinagar condemned his unjustified house arrest. It said that when Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was preparing to proceed to the historic mosque as per his usual schedule, he was informed by the authorities that he was under house arrest and would not be allowed to visit the mosque.
The Anjuman Auqaf termed such actions by the authorities as unjustified, extremely regrettable and an infringement on the Mirwaiz’s religious freedom. This act amounts to interference in religious matters, it added.
The Auqaf said this move once again caused disappointment among the devotees and worshippers who had come from across the valley to offer Friday prayers at the Jamia Masjid and to benefit from the Mirwaiz’s sermons.
Such unjustifiable actions by the LG-led administration are unacceptable, the Anjuman maintained.
