Priyanka Gandhi criticizes BJP for undermining constitution, spreading division
New Delhi: Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has sharply criticized the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for undermining the Indian Constitution and fostering division and fear in the country.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in her maiden speech as the newly-elected MP from Wayanad, during the ongoing debate on the 75th anniversary of the Constitution, Gandhi warned that the government’s actions were eroding the fundamental values of unity and justice.
“The Constitution is India’s ‘shield of protection,’ ensuring justice, equality, and the right to challenge oppressive rule. But today, it is being hijacked by those in power to serve their divisive agenda,” Gandhi stated, emphasizing that the Constitution is “Bharat ka Samvidhan” (India’s Constitution), not “Sangh ka Vidhaan” (RSS’s legislation).
She said that the BJP was sowing communal violence. Gandhi also expressed concern over the rising climate of fear, with journalists, professors, farmers, and activists facing intimidation from state agencies like the Income Tax Department and Enforcement Directorate. “A teacher in Uttar Pradesh was labeled anti-national,” she remarked. “People are being silenced, a teacher in Uttar Pradesh was even labeled anti-national,” Gandhi remarked, adding that the government’s tactics are designed to suppress dissent and stifle voices of opposition.
In a scathing critique of the Modi government, Gandhi said that it was favoring business tycoon Adani and added that policies were being tailored to benefit one individual at the expense of the country’s 1.42 billion people.
Gandhi also shared a heart-wrenching account of a young victim of the Sambhal violence, where police shot dead a Muslim tailor, along with four others, during protests against a court-ordered survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Uttar Pradesh on November 24, 2024. “A tailor had one dream—to educate his children, hoping one would become a doctor. But the police shot him dead. His son, Adnan, told me he would fulfill his father’s dream,” Gandhi said.
