Srinagar: Human rights activists have condemned the ongoing wave of arbitrary arrests and detentions in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, stating that Indian troops and agencies are targeting Kashmiris during widespread cordon-and-search operations and raids to suppress voices of dissent.
According to Kashmir Media Service, activists who preferred to remain anonymous, fearing reprisals, said in media interviews in Srinagar that Hurriyat leaders, journalists, rights defenders, and ordinary Kashmiris are being implicated in fabricated cases under draconian laws. These measures, they stated, are part of India’s strategy to prolong the illegal detention of nearly 5,000 Kashmiris in jails within IIOJK and across India.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, activists said India has intensified its brutal tactics to crush the Kashmiri freedom movement. Arbitrary arrests, custodial torture, and harassment have become routine under the Modi regime, which activists describe as frustrated in its attempts to subdue the people of Kashmir.
The use of military force and oppressive laws, activists say, demonstrates India’s unwillingness to engage in meaningful dialogue for a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir dispute. They accuse Indian leaders of systematically destroying peaceful avenues for resolving the conflict while attempting to erase Kashmiris’ identity and aspirations.
Despite relentless oppression, activists affirm that Kashmiris remain undeterred in their pursuit of self-determination, with many ready to make sacrifices for their right to freedom. They call India’s policies in Kashmir a blatant violation of international law and human rights and urge global human rights organizations to address the alarming trend of unlawful detentions and systemic repression in the territory.
The activists emphasize that India’s repressive measures will fail to deter Kashmiris’ resilience and reiterate the urgent need for international bodies to hold India accountable for its actions in IIOJK.
