BJP faces criticism for undermining India’s constitutional foundations laid by Ambedkar

New Delhi: India’s democratic and constitutional foundations are under scrutiny as the BJP government faces criticism for its disregard of national icons and democratic principles, highlighted by recent derogatory remarks about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution.

According to Kashmir Media Service, during a speech in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah passed disrespectful comments about Ambedkar, sparking outrage among opposition parties, particularly the Congress. The incident comes during Ambedkar’s death anniversary month, raising concerns about the government’s commitment to his ideals.

Dr. Ambedkar championed the right to dissent, secularism, and equality, yet critics argue the BJP’s policies—ranging from the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) to the rising incidents of hate crimes against minorities—contradict these principles. The government’s use of sedition laws and media restrictions to silence dissent has further eroded free speech and democratic values.

The BJP’s attempt to manipulate Ambedkar’s legacy for political gain, while promoting a Hindutva narrative, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition leaders and civil society.

Analysts say these actions reflect a deeper agenda to rewrite India’s secular and inclusive history in favor of majoritarian politics.
