NC reaches out to Mehdi to heal rift over Article 370, other issues

Srinagar: The National Conference (NC) has launched reconciliation efforts with its senior leader, Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, a Lok Sabha member from Srinagar, in a bid to address his concerns over key issues, including the restoration of Article 370, reservation rules, and statehood for Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mehdi had led a protest outside Omar Abdullah’s residence, expressing discontent over the lack of action on the matters. Following this, Mehdi maintained a conspicuous silence, abstaining from several official functions.

Recognizing the potential political fallout, senior NC leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chowdhary and Chief Minister’s Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, held a closed-door meeting with Mehdi. The meeting aimed to ensure Mehdi’s support for the upcoming Budgam by-election.

The Budgam constituency became vacant after Omar Abdullah relinquished his claim to the seat. Party insiders suggest that NC is considering fielding Nasir Aslam Wani for the by-election. Mehdi’s backing is seen as crucial for a strong and unified campaign.

A senior party leader said, “The meeting with Agha Ruhullah Mehdi is part of a reconciliation process. The party is committed to addressing his concerns and ensuring that he remains aligned with the broader goals of the National Conference”.
