IIOJK authorities again place Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest
Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, the authorities have once again placed All Parties Hurriyat senior leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his residence in Srinagar today.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the purpose of his house detention is to prevent him from delivering the Friday sermon and offering congregational prayers at the historic Jamia Masjid in Srinagar.
Meanwhile, Anjuman Auqaf of Jamia Masjid, Srinagar, in its statement expressed deep disappointment and regret over the house detention of its President Mirwaiz Umar Farooq.
It said this arbitrary and unjustified move by the authorities comes at a time when the holy month of Ramadan is going on – a month of immense spiritual significance for Muslims worldwide.
It said Jamia Masjid is the central place of worship where thousands gather for Friday prayers, seeking guidance, blessings, and connection with the Almighty. However, barring the Mirwaiz from fulfilling his religious duties and preventing the faithful from benefiting from his sermons deeply hurts the religious sentiments of the people, it added.
The Anjuman said it is distressing and disappointing for the people who come from far and wide to listen to his guidance. It said such restrictions, especially during the month of Ramdan, are completely uncalled for and go against the principles of religious freedom.
It demanded the immediate release of Mirwaiz Umar Farooq from his house detention so that he could carry on with his religious obligations as the Mirwaiz and guide the people, as has been the long-standing tradition of Mirwaizeen in occupied Kashmir.
