IIOJK witnesses 434 internet shutdowns in last 13 Years: Report

New Delhi: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) has witnessed the highest number of internet shutdowns in the past 13 years, totaling 434, severely hindering business operations, remote work, and overall economic growth in the disputed territory.

According to a report by Kashmir Media Service, the data released by Software Freedom Law Centre, India (SFLC.in) in its latest report titled “Let the Net Work 2.0,” highlights the crippling impact of internet shutdowns in IIOJK.

SFLC.in, a non-profit organization, stated that in 2023, Jammu and Kashmir experienced 13 internet shutdowns across different regions, collectively adding up to 435 hours of digital blackout. This resulted in significant economic losses, amounting to USD 8,598,324. In contrast, 2024 saw fewer shutdowns, totaling 44 hours and 20 minutes, which still led to a financial setback of USD 1,143,276. These figures underscore the devastating impact of internet shutdowns on entrepreneurs, e-commerce businesses, freelancers, remote workers, and small enterprises that depend on digital connectivity.

IIOJK’s entrepreneurs, who rely heavily on digital platforms and inter-state/international trade, suffer repeated losses due to these unpredictable shutdowns. Businesses in sectors such as handicrafts, saffron exports, and tourism services are particularly affected, unable to function efficiently in an economy that demands a constant online presence to engage with potential customers. Remote workers and freelancers also struggle to perform effectively during such interruptions.

With the rise in online job opportunities post-COVID-19, many in IIOJK have found employment with companies abroad. However, frequent internet shutdowns put them at a disadvantage compared to their counterparts in other regions, further complicating their work prospects.
