Musk–Modi standoff exposes India’s digital authoritarianism
Global concern mounts over India’s sweeping censorship regime
Islamabad: The legal battle between Elon Musk’s platform X and the Modi-led Indian regime has spotlighted India’s growing digital authoritarianism, with global implications for free expression and democracy.
According to Kashmir Media Service, rights observers say the Indian government’s push for mass online censorship, institutionalized through its “Sahyog” takedown portal, reflects a disturbing trend of silencing dissent under the guise of national security. Between 2024 and 2025, over 1,400 censorship orders were issued targeting satire, news reports, and even memes, many flagged by agencies under Home Minister Amit Shah.
This crackdown, now challenged in Indian courts by X, has drawn global concern over India’s erosion of democratic values. Critics argue the regime is criminalizing criticism and controlling narratives through digital suppression—actions that violate Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Observers warn that India’s model could embolden other governments to adopt similar repressive frameworks, threatening global internet freedom.
