Kashmir freedom stalwart Sheikh Tajammul remembered on 4th death anniversary
Islamabad: Renowned intellectual, veteran journalist, and founding Executive Director of Kashmir Media Service (KMS), Sheikh Tajammul-ul-Islam, was remembered on his 4th death anniversary for his unparalleled role in championing the Kashmiris’ freedom struggle.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sheikh Tajammul passed away on this day in 2021 after a brief illness at a hospital in Islamabad. A special Dua was offered at the KMS office, which was attended by all staff members. Paying glowing tributes to their late mentor, they recalled how under his leadership KMS emerged as the most authentic and reliable source of news about Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).
Born in Srinagar in 1954, Sheikh Tajammul-ul-Islam earned his LLB and M.A Urdu from Kashmir University. A fiery student leader, he organized youth under Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba in the 1970s, igniting a new spirit of resistance. He later worked as Chief Editor of Daily Azaan and other publications, while also practicing law from 1975–1984.
His unwavering commitment to the Kashmiris’ right to self-determination led to repeated arrests, forcing him to eventually migrate to Pakistan due to Indian persecution.
After the Fall of Dhaka in 1971, India unleashed malicious propaganda portraying Pakistan as incapable of supporting the Kashmiris’ freedom struggle. The development, followed by the Indira-Abdullah Accord of 1975, deepened despair among Muslims in occupied Jammu and Kashmir. At this critical juncture, Sheikh Tajammul-ul-Islam emerged as the visionary who revived hope and boosted the morale of his people. His planned international Kashmir conference in 1982, though banned by India, successfully mobilized and rejuvenated Kashmiri youth to carry forward the struggle with renewed vigor.
Throughout his life, he championed the Kashmir cause at global forums, representing it in Pakistan and abroad, including Nepal, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Singapore, Maldives, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UK, Canada and many European countries.
Highly respected in journalistic and intellectual circles, Sheikh Tajammul was known for his acumen, integrity, clarity of thought, and steadfast dedication.
A true freedom fighter, organizer, and voice of the oppressed, his services will forever remain etched in the history of Kashmiris’ struggle for self-determination.
