Indian SC hears petition against Wangchuck’s illegal detention

New Delhi: The Indian Supreme Court has issued notices to the Indian government and Ladakh administration during the hearing of a petition filed against the illegal detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuck from the Ladakh region of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sonam Wangchuck was arrested along with others after four people were killed in Indian police firing on protesters demonstrating for their rights in Leh on September 24.
Sonam Wangchuck’s wife Geetanjali Angmu had approached the Supreme Court of India for her husband’s release.
A bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice NV Anjaria heard the petition and directed the Indian government and the Ladakh administration to file a response to the petition filed against the alleged illegal detention of Sonam Wangchuck.
The Supreme Court also directed that copies of the detention documents and orders be provided to the petitioner Wangchuck’s wife.
The court also ordered that Sonam Wangchuck be provided with adequate medical facilities in jail.
The next hearing on the petition will now be held on October 14.
Sonam Wangchuck’s wife Geetanjali Angmu in her petition has said that her husband has been illegally detained and should be released.
She appealed to the Supreme Court to intervene immediately and ensure the protection and legal rights of Sonam Wangchuck.
Wangchuck, who was arrested under the National Security Act, is currently lodged in Jodhpur Jail in the Indian state of Rajasthan.
