Jamia suspends professor over question on ‘atrocities against Muslims’ in exam

New Delhi: The Indian capital New Delhi-based Jamia Millia Islamia has suspended a professor of social services Dr Virendra Balaji Shahre for including a question on “atrocities against Muslims” in a paper. The university has ordered an investigation into the matter.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the university administration will also register a case with the police in this regard.
The Jamia administration, terming the question as inflammatory and creating communal division, suspended the professor until the investigation is completed.
Indian media has reported that Dr Virendra Balaji Shahre, a professor of social services, put a question in the examination paper that mentioned atrocities against Muslims, which led to a strong reaction.
Jamia Millia Islamia suspended the professor, calling it negligence and carelessness. The professor’s suspension order was issued on December 23. The professor has been barred from leaving New Delhi without prior permission from the university administration.
In a tweet, a senior advisor to the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting called the professor’s question provocative, on which the university took immediate action.
