Arrest over ‘Pakistan Zindabad’ slogan reflects shrinking space for dissent in India

New Delhi: The arrest of an Indian citizen in Pune for allegedly chanting “Pakistan Zindabad” has invited criticism, with observers saying the incident reflects the shrinking space for free expression in India under the Modi government.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the individual was taken into custody after reportedly raising the slogan, an act that authorities treated as a criminal offense. Critics say the episode reflects the growing intolerance within India’s political climate, where even a slogan is increasingly being dealt with through punitive legal action.

Political analysts say that instead of addressing rising polarization, social unrest and internal dissent, the Modi-led government appears to be relying on aggressive policing of speech while encouraging hyper-nationalist narratives.

Observers note that expressions challenging dominant political narratives are often swiftly criminalized, a trend they say demonstrates the narrowing democratic space in the country.

They said such incidents raise serious questions about India’s repeated claim of being the “world’s largest democracy,” as civil liberties, freedom of expression and tolerance for dissent continue to face mounting pressure in an increasingly centralized and hardline political environment.
