Bodies of missing woman, 2 children found in Manipur amid escalating violence

Imphal: The ongoing violence in India’s Manipur state continues to escalate, with the recent discovery of three bodies believed to be those of a woman and two minor children who went missing earlier this month.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the bodies were found floating in a river in Jiribam district. The police suspect that these individuals were part of a group of six Meitei women and children who disappeared during a military operation near the Manipur-Assam border on November 7. While some claim the victims were kidnapped and held hostage by Indian paramilitary forces, others accuse the Kuki community of being responsible for the abduction.

The families and communities affected by this tragedy have been holding candlelight vigils in Imphal and Jiribam to demand the release of the missing people.

Meanwhile, a protest march was held, demanding justice for those killed in the November 11 by the Indian paramilitary forces. The protesters said that those killed were tribal volunteers who were protecting their villages and innocent people.

The BJP-led Indian government on Thursday reimposed the black law Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in several districts of Manipur.

Since the conflict erupted in May of the previous year, over 200 people, mostly from the Christian community, have lost their lives, and thousands more have been displaced by the violence.
