Chhattisgarh govt bans Adivasi organization, faces criticism

Human rights activists, civil society demand revocation of ban

Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has banned the Adivasi organisation Moolvasi Bachao Manch (MBM) for a year under the Chhattisgarh Special Public Security Act, 2005.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the ban, imposed on October 30, triggered criticism from activists who said that the government is suppressing dissent voices.

Activists and civil society groups denounced the ban and said that MBM has been a peaceful platform advocating for Adivasi rights. Sociologist and activist Nandini Sundar stated that MBM has demanded genuine development like schools and healthcare instead of security camps.

Human rights activist Soni Sori criticized the ban, pointing out that the government has failed to address Adivasi grievances.

The MBM, formed after the 2021 Silger firing incident where four Adivasis were killed during protests against a security camp, has since held over 30 demonstrations.

The ban has intensified debate over the government’s approach to dissent and Adivasi issues in the region. Activists continue to call for the revocation of the ban and an open dialogue with affected communities.
