17 injured as Indian police use tear gas, water cannons to stop farmers’ march to Delhi

Chandigarh: At least Seventeen farmers have been injured when Indian police fired tear gas shells and used water cannons on protesting farmers at Shambhu border as they attempted to march towards Delhi.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the farmers resumed their march today marking their third attempt to enter the Indian capital.

The farmers’ union stated that farmers resumed their foot march from the Shambhu border on Saturday, in a bid to pressure the Modi government on various demands, including a legal guarantee for Minimum Support Price (MSP).

However, the marching farmers were stopped by police deployed at Shambhu border, which fired tear gas shells and used water cannons to disperse the peaceful protesters.

Amid the ongoing protest, internet services in parts of Ambala were suspended from 6 am on December 14 until December 17.

Earlier, farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher questioned the government’s reasoning for preventing farmers from marching on foot, calling it unjustified. He reiterated the demand for the government to initiate talks, stressing the urgency of addressing their grievances to prevent further escalation of the protests.

It is noteworthy that previous attempts by farmers to march towards Delhi were also met with tear gas shelling by police. The clashes resulted in injuries to protestors, forcing them to suspend their marches.
