JKSDMI delegation submits petition to UK PM on Kashmir Issue
London: A delegation from the Jammu Kashmir Self Determination Movement International (JKSDMI) led by Chairman Raja Najabat Hussain submitted a petition to the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, urging the UK government to take decisive action on the ongoing Kashmir dispute.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the petition calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all Kashmiri political prisoners in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, an international investigation into human rights violations in IIOJK, and a renewed commitment to Kashmiris’ right to self-determination.
The petition called for a parliamentary debate on the illegal abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A, which stripped IIOJK of its special status, and advocate for international oversight on the matter, and facilitate an independent international investigation into human rights abuses in disputed territory, as documented in the UN reports of 2018 and 2019.
The petition recalls that despite numerous international efforts, the human rights situation in IIOJK has significantly deteriorated. Arbitrary detentions, enforced disappearances, and the silencing of pro-freedom political leaders continue unabated. With the increasing global focus on human rights and democratic values, the JKSDMI delegation has called upon the UK government to ensure that its foreign policy prioritises justice over economic considerations.
The petition highlights the UK’s historical and moral responsibility in the Kashmir dispute, dating back to the partition of the subcontinent in 1947. With a substantial British Kashmiri population exceeding one million, the issue remains deeply personal to many in the UK, who continue to raise concerns over the human rights violations in IIOJK.
