Unbreakable Solidarity: Standing with Kashmir
"The struggle for freedom is not just a struggle for land; it is a struggle for the soul of its people."
Yusra Shakeel
Kashmir Solidarity Day, observed annually on February 5, serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiri people. It is a day that transcends national borders and political differences, uniting people worldwide in a common determination to stand with the oppressed. For more than seven decades, Kashmiris have endured immense suffering, their voices silenced by a military beyond their control. Yet, despite their long-standing hardships, their struggle remains resilient, and their fight for freedom continues to inspire the world.
Despite being a Muslim-majority region, the state of Jammu and Kashmir faces numerous challenges. Maharaja Hari Singh, against the will of the Kashmiri people, chose to accede to India. The people of Kashmir were never given the opportunity to determine their own destiny and continue to live under Indian colonial rule. The atrocities committed against the people of Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir are well documented massacres, mass arrests, torture, and disappearances are just some of the horrors they endure daily. Yet, despite these immense challenges, their spirit remains unbroken. Kashmiris still dream of a future where they can live in peace, dignity, and freedom from oppression.
The day is dedicated to showing support for the people of Kashmir and reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to their cause. The solidarity shown by Pakistanis today is more than symbolic; it is an important reminder to the world that the Kashmir issue is not yet resolved and that the voice of the people of Kashmir deserves to be heard. Every year in AJK and Pakistan, people form a human chain to symbolize their unbreakable bond with the Kashmiris. These events included speeches, seminars, songs and prayers for justice and freedom for Kashmir. But Kashmir Solidarity Day is also celebrated beyond Pakistan’s borders. Kashmiri people from other countries, including the UK, participated in the commemoration, raising awareness of the plight of IoK and calling for international intervention. The situation on the ground for Kashmiris in IoK remains dire. They continue to live under military oppression, their lives controlled by restrictions and constant surveillance. Calls for Kashmir’s independence or integration with Pakistan have been suppressed by the Indian army. Despite repeated concerns, the international community has failed to take any significant steps to resolve the issue. The voices of the oppressed are often suppressed by regional interests, and the suffering of the Kashmiri people continues unabated. Their struggle is fueled by their unwavering belief in their right to self-determination, and their hope for a better future never fades.
The phrase “Kashmir Banega Pakistan” (Kashmir will be Pakistan) is more than just a slogan; it is a belief shared by millions, a dream held by those who envision a day when Kashmir will be free from the shackles of oppression. It is a vision that transcends political boundaries, a dream of justice, peace, and dignity for all. This is a human rights issue that demands international attention. The world must recognize that the Kashmiri people are being deprived of their basic rights too easily. It is time for the international community to take decisive action, pressuring India to end its human rights violations in Kashmir and ensuring that the people of Kashmir can determine their own future.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir conflict, stand in solidarity with the Kashmiri people in their struggle for justice, and raise awareness of the ongoing violence they face. We remind the world that the Kashmir issue is not just a regional dispute but also an international concern. The people of Kashmir continue to suffer, yet their hopes for a better future remain strong. It is our collective responsibility to support their quest for justice and ensure that their voices are heard.
Let us stand united with the people of Kashmir, not just on February 5, but every day, until they can live in peace and freedom. Their struggle is a testament to their resilience and unwavering dream of liberty. Kashmir is a cause that must never be forgotten. On Kashmir Solidarity Day, we remind ourselves of our duty to stand with those fighting for their rights and to never lose sight of the goal of a peaceful, just, and free Kashmir. The journey may be long, but as long as hope endures, change remains possible.
