Forced eviction campaign of Bengali Muslims underway in Assam
New Delhi: A state-sponsored forced eviction campaign of Bengali Muslims is underway in the Indian state of Assam.
According to Kashmir Media Service, human rights organizations and various groups of society have expressed serious concern over the Hindutva policies of the BJP government.
An eye-opener report by The Indian Express said that a report on the ongoing anti-Muslim campaign in Assam by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights has been submitted, which has revealed that over 3,300 Bengali Muslim families have been evicted during June and July this year.
A seven-member investigation team comprising human rights activists, lawyers, former officers and researchers visited the affected districts of Goalpara and Kamrup to prepare the report. The team in its report has said that the campaign was launched specifically to target Muslims, which is a clear violation of the Indian Constitution and human rights.
Syeda Syedain Hameed, President of the National Federation of Indian Women, said that Assam was never like this, now it has become a dangerous state and there has been a huge increase in hatred, contempt and revenge against Muslims. She said earlier in Assam, “Miya” was a metaphor for honor and respect, but now this word has become an abuse for Muslims. Similarly, words like “Bangladeshi” are being used to target Muslims in a hateful manner.
Renowned lawyer Prashant Bhushan has also strongly criticized the Assam government, saying that the state government is selling land to corporations without regard to the law, while Muslims of Bengali origin are being forcibly evicted from their lands.
The report said under the ideology of the BJP and the RSS, Assam is being used as an “experiment” where Muslims are being systematically targeted to establish Hindu majority rule.
According to analysts, this policy is not limited to Assam alone, but is part of a larger conspiracy to weaken the political, social and economic status of Muslims in India.
