Marino’s Balakot book questioned for reliance on unverified sources
Italian journalist’s claims contradict independent reporting

Islamabad: Italian journalist Francesca Marino’s book Balakot: From Pulwama to Payback, cited by NDTV in connection with the 2019 Balakot strike, has come under scrutiny for relying heavily on anonymous sources and presenting a narrative sharply at odds with independent observations and verified reports.
According to Kashmir Media Service, while Marino claims that Pakistani authorities removed 35 bodies, her reporting and book ignore the detailed accounts of international media outlets, including BBC, Reuters, AFP, New York Times, and Al Jazeera, all of which visited the site within 48 hours and found no evidence of casualties, reporting only minor damage to trees.
Critics note that Marino’s work consistently aligns with the Indian narrative, while overlooking key facts. India’s official claims on casualties changed repeatedly—from 300 to 350, then “a large number,” and finally asserting that “we hit the target”—without providing satellite imagery, names of alleged deceased, or verifiable intelligence to the international community.
Marino’s book also downplays failures of Indian security agencies prior to the Pulwama attack, and attempts to dilute Pakistan’s Operation Swift Retort by calling the downing of the MiG-21 “unfortunate” while ignoring India’s friendly-fire incident involving the MI-17 helicopter. Her articles are frequently published on lesser-known web platforms, and details of her professional background are limited, raising further questions about credibility and transparency.
Analysts point out that Marino’s reporting highlights a broader issue: the use of unverified sources to propagate a narrative supportive of India’s strategic objectives, while ignoring facts on the ground and independent verification.
Observers say her work underscores the importance of scrutinizing source credibility, particularly when military operations and sensitive cross-border events are involved.
