Delhi riots: Court acquits six Muslim youth after five years in prison

People ask whether those who ordered their arrests will also be punished?

New Delhi: A court has acquitted six Muslim youth after five years in prison in a Delhi riots case.

According to Kashmir Media Service, this decision brought relief and happiness to the homes of the youth after years, however, the question has arisen that who will decide the responsibility of the police officers who ruined the lives of innocent youth?

The youth, who have been acquitted, include Gulzar, Shahzad, Wajid, Sajid, Shahbaz and Saleem. The court in its verdict said that the Delhi Police could not present any concrete evidence to prove the charges of arson and looting.

The verdict once again exposed the flaws in investigation into the riots that are still affecting many Muslim families in Delhi. The court in its verdict said that the charges were weak and unproven, hence the imprisonment of these youth was inappropriate.

The court said that no credible evidence was presented before us. The prosecution could not prove the guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The verdict has raised serious questions about the role of the police during the riots. Shahzad’s elderly mother said in tears, “My son spent five years in jail for a crime he had nothing to do with. Who will pay him back those five years?” Her question reflects the pain and anger of Delhi’s Muslim population.

Now people want to know whether those who ordered these arrests will also be punished. A local person said that if the police had no evidence, then why were these youths imprisoned for five years? Is there any answer to this injustice?
