Hasina Wajid sentenced to five years in prison in corruption case

Dhaka: Bangladesh’s fugitive former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wajid has been sentenced to five years in prison in a corruption case.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Sheikh Hasina’s sister has been sentenced to seven years in prison and her niece, British MP Tulip Siddique, to two years in prison in the same case.

According to Bangladeshi media, other accused named in the case have also been sentenced to five years in prison. Sheikh Hasina and others were accused of illegally acquiring a plot in the diplomatic area of Dhaka by using their influence.

Earlier, Sheikh Hasina has been sentenced to death and 21 years in prison in two different cases.

Meanwhile, the report of the inquiry commission regarding the 2009 coup in Bangladesh has also come out. The report claims that Sheikh Hasina ordered the killing of military officers during the coup. Seventy four people, including several high-ranking military officers, were killed in the coup.

According to the inquiry commission, the involvement of foreign forces was also clearly found in the incident, while the head of the commission said that India played a role in destabilizing Bangladesh and weakening the army.

According to the report, former prime minister Sheikh Hasina gave the green signal for the massacre at the behest of India, and former MP Fazal Noor Taposh also played an important role in it.

According to the commission report, the soldiers were blamed in the first inquiry, but the government’s opponents said that Sheikh Hasina herself planned the coup to weaken the army.

The head of the interim government, Dr Muhammad Yunus, welcomed the inquiry report and said that the nation was kept in the dark about the reasons for the massacre.
