Labourers stage protest in Kupwara against discrimination, employment denial

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, residents in Kupwara district staged a protest against the Beacon department over its discriminatory attitude against local labourers and denying them employment opportunities in ongoing road construction works.
According to Kashmir Media Service, dozens of people from Batpora, Jaktiyal-C, Bangam and Bharam Dhari areas assembled to demonstrate against the department’s practice of sidelining genuine local workers. The protesters said that despite the Beacon department carrying out road construction and other developmental projects in the area for nearly two decades, local labourers have been continuously ignored.
“Officials and mates of the said department are giving preference to their relatives, friends and close acquaintances while genuine local labourers are being deprived of work opportunities,” they said.
They added that the matter has been raised with the concerned authorities multiple times but no action has been taken.
The protesters warned that if their demands are not addressed, they would intensify the agitation in the coming days.
The demonstrators sought immediate intervention by the authorities to ensure employment opportunities for local workers.
