Congress slams Modi for ‘extreme moral cowardice’ over Israel support

Rejects Netanyahu’s claim of India’s ‘crazy love’ for Israel

New Delhi: India’s opposition Congress party has launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he “displayed “extreme moral cowardice” by emerging as Israel’s strongest supporter. The party also criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his claim that India has an “absolutely crazy love for Israel,” stating that such affection is confined to Modi’s ecosystem and does not represent the sentiments of the Indian people as a whole.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the criticism came in response to Zionist Prime Minister’s reported statement at a conference in the West Bank. Netanyahu, who is facing an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC) over war crimes linked to the ongoing genocide in Gaza, said, “We face delegitimisation in much of the world – but not in India. In India, there is an absolutely crazy love for Israel.” He also described India as a “huge power” and claimed he had more followers from India than from anywhere else.

Responding to the remarks, Rajya Sabha member and Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, said Netanyahu’s comments would have been more accurate had he referred specifically to Prime Minister Modi’s ecosystem rather than India as a whole.

He criticized Modi for maintaining close ties with Israel despite growing international condemnation of Israeli actions in Gaza, the occupied West Bank and Lebanon. He said Modi warmly embraced Israel even before the launch of massive aerial attacks on Iran alongside the United States earlier this year and never condemned the assassination of Iranian leaders. He further said Modi had remained silent over Israeli genocide and devastation in Gaza, the bombing of Lebanon and the forced displacement of lakhs of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank. He added that Modi had also failed to speak against curbs imposed on the civil rights of Palestinians living in Israel.

Jairam Ramesh said Modi had emerged as Netanyahu’s strongest supporter and reffered to what he called the “Modani conglomerate” nexus. “Mr. Modi has stood out as Mr. Netanyahu’s strongest supporter. Israel is embedded in the Modani conglomerate. He has been demonstrating extreme moral cowardice, and his stance is a betrayal of all that India stands for. It is shameful and unacceptable to crores of Indians,” he said.
