Mirwaiz put under house arrest in Srinagar, condemns Bollywood film mocking Kashmiri pellet victims

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the authorities placed senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest and prevented from attending a youth event in Srinagar.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in a post on X, the Mirwaiz said he was scheduled to address a gathering organised by local youth at Eidgah in the city but was not allowed to leave his residence.

“Again put under house arrest today and prevented from attending an event organised by the youth of downtown Srinagar at Eidgah. Regret that the opportunity to engage with the youth was obstructed,” he wrote.

The Mirwaiz also expressed concern over an upcoming Bollywood film ‘Chauhaan’ that portrays the use of pellet guns in Kashmir ascausing “limited damage” and makes light of the suffering of thousands of pellet victims.

“A disturbing write up in a leading international news network reports an upcoming Bollywood film, referring to use of pellet guns in Kashmir as a means of “limited damage“ and mocking at the suffering of pellet victims.” Mirwaiz was referring to an Al Jazeera report titled “‘Limited damage’: Upcoming Bollywood film angers Kashmir pellet gun victims”.

He said such a portrayal was insensitive to the plight of thousands of people who continue to live with pellet injuries inflicted by Indian forces.

“For thousands of victims living and suffering the consequences of pellets lodged in their eyes and limbs, this is akin to rubbing salt in their wounds. These victims, mostly young, need empathy, care and justice, not propaganda,” he said.

The Mirwaiz urged the filmmakers to reconsider such insensitive depiction and refrain from releasing the film in its present form.
