PPP announces to hold rallies across Sindh on Sunday against Indian water aggression

Karachi : The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Sindh, has announced to hold protest rallies across the province on Sunday against India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty and its violation of Pakistan’s water rights.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the protest rallies were announced by PPP Sindh President Nisar Ahmed Khuhro in a statement issued in Karachi.

He said the PPP will hold protest rallies in all district headquarters across Sindh on July 12. He said in this regard, all district organizations of the PPP will hold protest rallies in their respective districts. He said the Indus River and its water are our survival and life, which will not be allowed to be strangled.

Criticizing India, he said unilaterally suspending the Indus Waters Treaty is a violation of international agreements. He said India cannot unilaterally terminate or suspend this agreement, as its purpose is to ensure fair distribution of water resources and prevent water-related disputes.

Nisar Khoro said that the water agreement between Pakistan and India was signed on September 19, 1960 and under this agreement, Pakistan was given the Indus, Jhelum and Chenab rivers, while India was given the Ravi, Beas and Sutlej rivers.

A permanent Indus Commission consisting of Indus Commissioners of both countries was established, and in case of differences, the first commission can approach the Court of Arbitration. Therefore, the Court of Arbitration has also declared the unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty by India as illegal.

He said that India’s attempt to use water as a weapon would be a threat to regional peace, while livelihood and life are linked to the Indus River, and no one will be allowed to succeed in any way by strangling the river and snatching lives.

Nisar Khoro said the natural flow of rivers and the principles of fair use of water should be recognized because water was given to Pakistan not as a favour but under an international agreement, and India’s withholding of our water is a threat to our existence.

He said he will raise his voice at every forum for the protection of the water of the Indus River.
